Wardrobe Planning for Your Boudoir Photography Session

You've scheduled your boudoir session in our Columbus studio and anxiously await the big shoot. Here are some tips on preparing for your glamorous time under the lights at the J Hesper Photography studio.

The calendar is marked and the clock is ticking. An exciting boudoir shoot is just ahead. First thing to do is plan your wardrobe. Always pick a style of lingerie that you are comfortable with. Ranging from gowns to corsets to bra and panty sets, you have myriad options. It's nice to plan your wardrobe with enough variety to keep your looks separate and interesting. Depending on the number of set looks you've scheduled, you can incorporate different styles, colors, and materials to look fresh in each one. Lingerie can be playful, sexy, naughty or nice. Pick the styles you like or use a little bit of each, but always stay within your range of taste and comfort. Feeling confident and happy is the key to any photo shoot and will always show through your pictures. Working with a good photographer will bring out those qualities even more.

If the wardrobe has you stumped, always consider shopping around and keeping an open mind. This may not be the sort of style you're used to wearing every day, so buying your lingerie ahead of time and trying it out will help prepare you to see yourself in a seductive new light. You're not strictly limited to lingerie, either. Boudoir photos can be taken with as much or as little clothing as you'd like. Gentlemen's button-downs, ties, suspenders, hats, jerseys and boxers have all made an appearance, and quite nicely, too. Just a pair of cheeky panties can set the mood for teasing with demurely covered breasts, propped on a pillow or casually draped in bedding. Well placed feathers, pillows, hats, wraps and stoles have eliminated the need for lingerie entirely in a number of boudoir sessions.

Corsets are known as works of art in and of themselves. Their structure and craftsmanship can be shown off nicely in a boudoir photography session. Vintage-style or pin-up lingerie can often offer more coverage yet still be a saucy way to create a fun and sexy look. Old Hollywood glamour can also keep you a little more under wraps with a satin gown, hints of fur, and don't forget the stockings. Stockings, garters, and heels are notorious for their sex appeal and shouldn't be overlooked, especially if you want a classic boudoir feel to your photos.

Contemporary lingerie lends an in-the-moment feel to any boudoir session. Modern cuts are sexy and conform to many personal styles. Show off your hips and cheeks in some cutie-pie boy shorts, reveal your assets in a thong and demi bra, or get decadent and glam in a bodysuit or ruffles. Whatever your style, shop around and make sure your pieces fit and make you feel great.

Let's take a moment and discuss the importance of accessories. You've got your looks planned and you're ready to rock them. Now let's get to the details. Stockings and garters have been mentioned, but what about jewelry, shoes, and personal props? The less clothing you are wearing, the more fun it is to accessorize. Earrings, necklaces, bracelets, your engagement/wedding ring and veil if you have a bridal theme, and heels and men's style hats can all make an outfit. Boudoir photography is about taking the bedroom look and adding some glitz and decadence. Don't be afraid to pair your lingerie with accessories that are vastly different from your daytime look. Chandelier earrings, fur and feathers, beads and baubles, satin sky-high heels and chunky bracelets all have their place on the boudoir set. Not shy? Pick up some sparkly tassels and pasties for a burlesque look and get ready for a raucous good time. Wearing little to nothing? Grab a couple necklaces and be yourself!
